This is what we like to call a “song of hope.” Many will call these songs a song of lament, but I think that the term “lament” has gotten a bit lost - or maybe it just hasn’t been explained in its entirety. A Psalm of lament was never just a sad song that bemoaned how hard doing the things we don’t want to do is, or complaining about life in general. A song of lament spoke about the reality of the situation, yes. It asked questions. It said things were difficult or frustrating. BUT it was always interspersed with hope. It was always anchored in hope. It was always tethered to the steadfast foundation of who God is. So, to make this point clearer, we have begun calling these songs “songs of hope” instead. Songs that say life can be difficult, we can have a bunch of questions about our situation, we can be weary in our waiting, we can be frustrated about our surroundings, BUT, instead of looking to man, instead of becoming anxious, instead of taking matters and trying to figure them out through man’s methods, we are going to go to God. We are going to speak to Him in prayer, we are going to converse with Him about our questions. And we do this with hope. The hope that rests in His work being sufficient, in His promises being certain, in the surety of who He is, in the ever-present joy that is in our lives (despite our circumstances) because there is always reasons for praise - He saved us! He is transforming us! He has done this work in our lives! He is who He says He is! He has enabled us to be able to come to Him in prayer and to live for Him in worship because He knows that is for our greatest joy - we can see His glory, we can live in the joy that He desires for His people, this joy of knowing Him. So, this song speaks about that - how we trust in Him, we look to Him, and we say, even in our changing circumstances, He is enough for us, He is our reason for constant praise, He is our Treasure that far surpasses things of this world. We have a hope that is so different and so solid - we rest on this foundation.
Song Lyrics
When the waves crash all around me
When the storms are drawing close
When the ground nearby is shaking
I will trust in You alone
I will trust in You, Lord
CHORUS:
I know You are enough for me
You are my all in all
My Rock and my great Saviour
Always worthy to be praised
When the winds outside are howling
When the clouds begin to form
As I struggle with the waiting
I will look to You alone
I will look to You, Lord
BRIDGE:
My joy that will not waver
My Pearl of greatest price
My Hope, my strong foundation
I will ever praise Your Name
